A solid state rectifier reduces power consumption and damaging heat, and increases the output of a vacuum tube rectifier. To help prolong power tube life when using a solid state rectifier one should consider use a standby switch in the power supply to allow filament "warm up" voltage prior to applying high voltage through the rectifier.
